An Overview of Web 2.0 in Higher Ed: Kevin L. Crow

Description: "Web 2.0" in one of the latest buzzwords in the academic computing that possibly represents a paradigm shift in the way that post secondary learners locate, process, and distribute information. Unfortunately, however, most post secondary educators understand little about this term: "web 2.0" or the significance that it holds for post secondary learning. In this session the presenter will utilize Web 2.0 technologies in order to help enable participants to (1) understand what is meant by the term "Web 2.0", (2) understand how Web 2.0 tools differ from Web 1.0 tools, (3) discover what Web 2.0 tools are being used on today's college campuses, and (4) learn where to locate, and how to start using Web 2.0 tools. The presenter will provide real-world examples of how Web 2.0 technologies can be utilized in order to facilitate high-quality, authentic learning in post secondary environments.

Community Colleges in Virtual Worlds: Denise Cote

Description: The use of virtual worlds in higher education is becoming more and more mainstream. In fact, Community Colleges across the country are embracing this technology and are implementing learning experiences for students in a variety of disciplines. The most popular platform with educators is the virtual world called “Second Life.” The College of DuPage sponsors the year-old virtual users group, “Community Colleges in Second Life” that now has close to 300 members. This popular use of new technology, though exciting, is not without concerns for privacy, intellectual property rights and student safety. In this presentation, participants will learn what Second Life is, how it is accessed by students and faculty, how much it costs to implement and how community colleges are using it with students. We’ll also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of using virtual worlds in community college education.
